AMC Long Put: the essentials

Long Put FAQ

Educational overview of how the strategy works — not financial advice.

What is a long put on AMC?

You buy a put on AMC Entertainment (AMC) for a premium — the right to sell 100 shares at the strike before expiration. It's a defined-risk bearish bet, or insurance on shares you already own.

How much can I make and lose on a AMC long put?

Loss is capped at the premium paid. Profit grows as AMC falls and maxes out if the stock reached $0: (strike − premium) × 100 — large but capped, unlike an unlimited-risk short.

What is the breakeven on a AMC long put?

The strike price minus the premium you paid. AMC must fall below that by expiration for the put to profit.

Long put vs short-selling AMC?

A put caps your loss at the premium and needs no share borrow or margin, but it decays and expires. Short-selling has theoretically unlimited loss and borrow costs but never expires. The put is the defined-risk way to be bearish or to hedge.

Can I use a AMC put to protect shares I own?

Yes — a "protective put" sets a price floor under your AMC Entertainment position for the cost of the premium, like insurance with a deductible (the gap between today's price and the strike). Your downside below the strike is covered; the premium is the cost of that protection.
